The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
