A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
